Relationship Conflict - Blow Up or Blow Through

April 30th, 2008

Every now and then I hear a “relationship expert” say that they have never had a argument with their spouse. This is when I find myself thinking this person is either lying or certainly can’t relate to me.

Conflicts come to all relationships. It’s how we handle the conflict that make the difference between a great relationship and a break up looking for a place to happen.

3 Approaches to Avoid

Blow Up - Blowing up is one of the most common ways to handle conflict, especially for men. Somehow we get the notion that getting mad at something can solve any problem. Maybe blowing up was modeled for us at home, or perhaps anger is the emotion with which we are most familiar.

There’s just a couple of problems with this approach. At best blowing up will distance people, and at worst, scares them, even scares them away.

And it doesn’t solve the problem either.

Blow In - Blowing in is taking all those yucky feelings caused by conflict and swallowing them, stuffing them inside. Here’s the kind of conversation that often occurs:

Partner 1: “How did you like the movie?”

Partner 2: “Fine.”

Partner 1: “How did you like the music?”

Partner 2: “Fine.”

Partner 1: “Would you like to see it again?”

Partner 2: “Fine?”

Uh oh.

One problem with blowing in is that if you do it as a lifestyle and for a lifetime, it can literally make you sick, even kill you. The body can only take so much poison before it causes damage.

The other problem with blowing in is that anger and resentment will grow and build up. Sometimes for just a few minutes or days, sometimes for years, but an explosion is coming. So blowing in eventually leads to, you guessed it, blowing up.

Blowing Off: This one appears so innocent, with statements from “Hey, it’s no big deal” all the way to “Oh just get over it and get a life!”

And yet it’s not so innocent.

Blowing off sends at least three lousy messages:

=>you are not understood,
=>you don’t count,
=>your feelings are not important or cared about.

With just one of the above, you’ve got trouble.

With all three, you’ve got a breakup looking for a place to happen.

A Better Way to Handle It

Blowing Through - Here’s a few quick and easy steps:

1) See the conflict as the enemy, not each other. While it is easier said than done, it makes a huge difference. Seeing the conflict as an enemy from outside the relationship allows you to do two important things:

=>avoid fighting to be right,
=>team up and attack the problem together.

2) Identify the conflict. Name it so you can tame it.

3) Nuke it. Throw everything you have at it. All your creativity, silly and crazy ideas, all the skills, solutions and tools you each have, go into knocking this thing out in a way that works for both of you.

And that’s not all.

To truly blow through a conflict, you’ve got one more thing to do………..

4) Set it up so that it’s not likely to happen again. When conflicts like this arise again, and they will, you now have a game plan, an “our way” of handling it that allows you to blow right through it.

Dry Skin Care

April 29th, 2008

Is your dry skin itchy and flaky or cracking and peeling?
While dry skin may indicate any of several skin disorders such as psoriasis or eczema, you may simply have skin that is badly in need of hydration. The epidermis, or outer layer of skin, is easily dehydrated, particularly in cold, windy weather or after extensive unprotected sun exposure. Flaky, itchy skin, itchy scalp, or scaling can result. Painful chaffing can appear on the skin.

These problems can be very annoying and uncomfortable, not to mention
unattractive. Severely dehydrated skin can result in dermatitis, a common skin
irritation. Dermatitis can be easily treated by your physician, but it is
certainly unattractive and uncomfortable during an attack of dermatitis.

To cure your serious itchy, scaly skin problems, you must
avoid cleaning the skin with hot water. Always cleanse itchy, flaky or cracked
skin with lukewarm water. Using water that is too hot simply removes more of
the important natural protective oils produced by the skin, resulting in more
itching, cracking and flaking. While skin is still damp from cleansing,
liberally apply a good quality moisturizing
lotion or oil to the affected areas. There are lotions specifically
formulated for itchy, cracking skin problems and are available at very
affordable prices. If you believe your skin problem may be psoriasis, eczema,
dermatitis or another of the many skin problems, you should consult with your
doctor. But for every day, common dehydrated skin, regular use of moisturizing
products applied twice per day should remedy the problems quickly.

If scaly, itchy scalp is your problem, cleanse hair
thoroughly with moisturizing shampoo,
rinsed well with tepid water. Follow this with a good quality moisturizing
conditioner. If itchy, flaky scalp problems continue, you may need to seek the
advice of your doctor to obtain a prescription formula shampoo to control the
flaking.

Spend Less Time at Work and Get More Done

April 28th, 2008

Sounds too good to be true?

It really isn’t!

In fact, studies show that after a certain amount of hours at work each week, the average worker hits diminishing returns for their labor.

Here are a couple of reasons this is true.

Family drain.

Does your spouse or family complain that you work too much? This puts strain on you when you’re at work and limits your effectiveness. Cutting out five or more hours a week and spending it with your family will make them happier and that will make you happier too, enabling you to enjoy your work more and get more done.

A healthy home life helps ensure a happy work life.

Mental fatigue.

Remember the old saying, “All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy”?

After a certain amount of time at work, your brain goes on auto-pilot and begins to work ineffectively. Taking some more time to relax and recreate will put you at a higher level of performance when you do go to the office.

Get some exercise, take up a hobby, but take some more time off. It will help your work become more effective!

Playing Live Casino Poker for the First Time - What You Should Know!

April 28th, 2008

The type of game and the stakes you are going to play for are the two first decisions you have to make before entering a live casino poker game.

The minimum buy-ins in most live poker rooms are ten times the minimum bet, but a general rule of thumb is to never bring less than forty times the minimum bet to the table.

This means that you should for a 2/5 game bring a minimum of $80 and for a 5/10 game bring at least $200.

Poker chips are used as a replacement currencie for real money in live casino poker rooms.

You buy the chips from the cashier in the back of the poker room before sitting down or a chip runner will bring the chips to you after you have sat down at the table of your choice.

Most live casino poker rooms have a desk in front of the poker room with a Brush (casino employee) working behind it. You tell the Brush your name and what game you want to play.

You will most likely be placed on a waiting list when you get there but the Brush will tell you what the approximate waiting times are like for each table.

When your name is called, the Brush will point out the table and the seat you will be playing at.

You count seats in clockwise direction from the dealers left, so the first seat to the dealers immediate left will be seat number one.

The mechanics and the flow of playing in live poker games will become second nature to you after a little while. You will pick up a lot from watching the other players and don’t be afraid to ask the dealer or a floorperson if you have any questions.

True Poker Guide covers a comprehensive list of poker rules, tips and strategies for all poker games including tournament and satellite play.

Office Chairs, Choose Your Options Wisely

April 27th, 2008

So many different features, styles and colors are available that it can be confusing to make sure to order the correct options for your office chair. Sitting in your office chair for considerable lengths of time is standard with computers playing such an important role in the 21st century. Practicing proper ergonomics while making sure to purchase the right size of chair are key factors for a healthy body and spine when spending lengthy hours of time seated.

The standard options available on most task office chairs and stools are things like seat height adjustment levers, a tilt mechanism, tilt locking pins and lumbar support with adjustments on each. Having proper lumbar support and the adjsutability of the tilt mechanism are probably the most important features in order to stay comfortable in the long term. The lower back is the area facing the most stress when sitting for long periods of time and the extra lumbar support can really be felt. Lumbar support can also be optioned with an adjustment scale to help place the support where needed for the users body type even with different users.

The desired position when seated in your office chair is in a slightly reclined position, so a tilt mechanism is needed for proper positioning. This also works to prevent back problems in the long term. Some tilt mechanisms also come with locking positions to help the user to properly recline into the desired position for the task at hand.

One feature that is helpful for users but is found mostly in more expensive models, is an option referred to as synchro-knee tilt. This allows the user’s feet to stay on the floor while straight backed and even when in a reclining position. Ergonomics also call for your feet to stay on the floor at all times to keep the spine in the correct position. The synchro-knee tilt mechanism simply reclines the feet at a slower ratio than it does the back of the seat. The ratio is approximately 2 degrees for recline in each position for the back support and 1 degree for recline in each position for the seat.

A headrest can be helpful to the taller user or the user who spends more time reclining than the average worker. When choosing a high backed model versus a mid or low backed model, it seems to be more of a taste issue than ergonomic needs. Most executive chairs feature a high back while the task chairs are standard in a mid back form. When choosing the features for a chair where you intend to spend a great deal of your day, keep in mind your body type and individual tasks that need to be performed daily to find the perfect office chair for you.

I Can See My Feet! How To Get Rid Of That Big Gut

April 26th, 2008

I remember touring Indiana and the Midwest with my seminars and one of my university chums, an ex-ballplayer as it turned out, was talking about guys who get out of shape.

Of course, that wasn’t me, at least that’s what I thought, but he did offer a standard by which to distinguish the truly fat from the slightly puffy:

Can you stand with your feet together, bury your chin in your chest, gaze down and see your feet?

Or, is your gut in the way?

It didn’t take too many years on the road, with its sedentary ways and rich food and drink to put me into the I Can’t See My Feet Club. I was, for lack of a better term, shocked when I connected his definition to my midsection.

But, happily, there is a way back from tubbiness, if you’re willing to work at it.

Here’s the formula that worked for me. I call it attacking the killer B’s:

(1) Cut out the booze.

(2) Cut out the beef.

(3) Cut out the bonbons (sweets and desserts).

Each of these moves is worth at least five pounds of weight loss, or 15 pounds, total.

You’ll probably drop this load within six months, or less.

Of course, exercise is the next part of the equation. If you jog a couple of miles a day, I assure you that you’ll drop a minimum of five more pounds, and maybe more.

Do some abdominal exercises, but I don’t like crunches. I use twists.

Stand with your feet apart, lift your arms as if you’re an airplane, move to the left, then to the right, sucking in your gut each time. You can breathe when you wish. I do it, every two or three sets of twists.

How many should you do? I do them in sets of 100, and do 500 to 1,000 per day.

Just the twists, apart from any dramatic dietary or exercise commitments, enable me to tighten my belt after several weeks.

But if you can do the entire package, it’s not unrealistic to go from 250 to 200, or less, over the course of a year. I’ve accomplished that, and then some.

And now, yes, I CAN see my feet!

Exposing the Car Insurance Quote Mystery

April 26th, 2008

Congratulations, you have just purchased the car of your dreams;
you worked a great deal, now it is time to insure it. Car
insurance is mandatory in all states, and must be maintained
throughout ownership. Insurance quotes can vary from company to
company, and there are a few factors that you can control, and
other factors you cannot. A full understanding of how insurance
quotes are arrived at, will give you the best rate, and maximum
coverage.

Factors that cannot be controlled include the age of the driver.
Common sense tells us that a new driver would be more of a risk
to an insurance company, than an established driver. Therefore a
driver in their early 20’s would pay a higher premium than a
driver in their 40’s. Further, elderly drivers have poor
reaction time, and similarly would pay more of a premium. The
ideal driving age would be between 35 to 55 years; anyone
younger, or older would pay more.

Gender is another uncontrolled factor that insurance quotes are
based on. Statistically, insurance companies see females as
safer drivers than males. As a result, female drivers pay less
than their male counterparts.

There are factors, which we can control, namely the amount of
traffic tickets and accidents. A ticket is a violation of law
that could potentially result in an accident. Insurance
companies frown on this, and will penalize the driver with
higher rates. Similarly, accidents could indicate a pattern of
behavior; as such the driver is penalized with higher rates.

Where you live is another controlling factor that effects
insurance quotes. Living in a rural area, puts the driver at
much less risk of accident or theft as compared to living in a
city. As a result, city drivers will pay a larger premium than
rural drivers with very few exceptions.

Want to drive a Porsche 911 Carrera? It will cost you. The more
your car is worth, the higher your insurance quote will be. The
logic should be obvious.

Car insurance companies are now looking at your credit
worthiness. Do you have excessive, outstanding credit, or no
credit at all? If so, you are a risk in the eyes of the
insurance companies, and will get socked with higher insurance
quotes. Keeping your credit in check will show the insurance
companies you are responsible, both financially, and on the
road. As a result, you will pay lower premiums.

Your occupation can put you at a higher risk. Jobs that require
many hours of driving, or driving in hazardous conditions, or
places will put your quote at a higher rate. Less driving, and
exposure to high-risk opportunities, will result in lower
premiums. Additionally you want to keep your annual mileage down
to a minimum. The more miles you drive, the greater the risk of
accident.

Vehicle theft is a risk factor that can easily be minimized.
Most companies will give you a discount for having better
security for your vehicle. An alarm, or another approved
anti-theft device will usually result in some discount. Some
companies may insist on having such devices installed on more
expensive and desirable cars before they even consider offering
you a price.

Some companies look favorably on drivers who have taken a
defensive driver’s course. They see this as a commitment to
safer driving, thereby lowering the risk of accident, resulting
in lower premiums.

Keep in mind these are just general guidelines, and the
difference in price between various companies can be
significant. What one company may consider a high-risk factor
another company may not view as so important. The bottom line,
keep your credit in check, be careful on the road and choose a
car that fits your budgets.

Aquatic Fitness The Move To Water Exercise

April 25th, 2008

At the Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Tucson, Ariz., guests find healing in the water. The resort’s 11,000- square-foot Aquatic Center features three Watsu pools, a cross-training pool with conditioning equipment, two aquatic therapy pools and a whirlpool. There is also a complete Water Workout Station and it is making a big splash with guests.

“Water is the wave of the future,” said Karma Kientzler, an aquatic therapy expert and outside consultant for Canyon Ranch in Tucson. “People are using their bones and joints to such excess that water will become the means for most people to stay healthy. It is a means to life enhancement and enrichment, especially in a spa and health care environment.”

The Aquatrend, a scientifically designed piece of stainless steel equipment, was installed at Canyon Ranch about 10 years ago to help take the “work” out of workouts, Kientzler said. It makes working out a pleasurable experience, especially for those suffering from arthritis, knee and hip replacement or sports injury recovery. The power of water has become an integral part of spa relaxation and rejuvenation — it’s a healer, a stress reducer, and an amenity that everyone can enjoy regardless of age or physical condition,” she said.

For the physically challenged or non-swimmer, water exercise is safe because there is always something nearby to hold onto.

On the flip side, those who are more fit or who are interested in the resistance benefits from ‘Aquacise’ or aqua therapy can use a water workout station to work isolated body areas to lose weight and inches, and to facilitate aerobic and anaerobic training. It provides the basic exercise everyone needs to strengthen cardiovascular and respiratory systems while building strength and endurance.

‘The Value of Aquatic Exercise’

According to the Aquatic Exercise Association, Aquatic fitness is defined as activities performed in the water that promote and enhance physical and mental fitness. Aquatic fitness is typically performed in a vertical position in shallow or deep water. There are numerous applications to appeal to a wide variety of participants.

Here’s how it works… and why it works. Water buffers the body from gravity and makes a person virtually weightless when they are totally submerged. When a person’s head is out of the water, he or she weighs approximately 10 percent of normal body weight. Therefore, exercising in the water offers protective cushioning that land-based exercise cannot.

Researchers tell us that exercise injuries are usually related to impact. Every time a person’s foot comes in contact with the floor, impact occurs. Because a person weighs so much less in the water, the impact on the body is reduced. Water has the same advantages to toning as it does in cushioning. In order to get muscles in shape or “toned,” a person has to work against something. On land, a person fights gravity, but water limits the effect of gravity on the body.

Aquatics: ‘Hard to Resist’

Mike Jandzen, Aquatics Director at the Sea Colony Resort in Bethany Beach, Delaware, who is responsible for managing water fitness programs at the property’s 12 pools and fitness center, said hardcore athletes are drawn to exercising in a gym because they prefer a more gravitational type of resistance for muscle toning and strength training. However, Jandzen said he is seeing more and more interest in the property’s aquatics programs, such as water aerobics and water exercise, because they can be enjoyed by young and old alike and offer cardiovascular conditioning, strength training and muscle toning while greatly reducing the impact on muscles and joints.

“Over the past several years we’ve seen aquatics becoming the exercise vehicle of choice,” he said. “We’ve had a water exercise unit in our aqua therapy pool for many years, and it’s constantly in use. Our senior guests enjoy it for therapy as well as for strength training and muscle toning. The water aspect makes it low impact. It’s easy to use, easy on joints and easy on muscles because buoyancy relieves the demands placed on all body parts.”

Every time a person gets into the pool, he or she is losing weight from the resistance that water provides, noting that the resistance of water is 12 times that of air. When exercising in water, the body still creates extra heat because muscles are being used. However, the body has a much easier time transferring your exercise heat to the water than it does to the air. The result is a workout that immediately feels refreshing and cool, and not hot and soggy from sweat.

A quality Water Workout Station provides Body Sculpting exercises, including standing squats, lateral pull ups, hanging leg pulleys, closed-grip pull ups, forward dips, single knee extensions/curls, leg diamonds, abdominal press, reverse abdominal and straight abdominal curl. Cardio Circuits provide 13 exercises, including: squat and lift, reverse lunge, chin ups, cardio-sprint, single bicep curls, body swings, cardio bobbing jumping jacks, single knee tucks, seat push ups, cardio-seated bicycle, oblique reach, reverse leg pull-downs and cardio-seated bicycle. There is also a Power Circuit, which incorporates aerobic and muscular conditioning, including: lat pull up/body swing combo, closed grip pull-up/reverse curl combo, cardio hurdles, reverse dip abductor/adductor cross combo, hanging curl-skate kick combo, cardio-cross country ski, body pike push-up combo, cardio seat down sprinting, straight curl-alternating elbow and cardio - seat down leg flurries.
