The Savvy Marketplace

Turning Demographics Into Gold

August 31st, 2008

Do you know who buys, or is likely to buy, your products, services, or information?

If not, you should be looking for demographic information that will help you make good marketing decisions.

You do not have to be a research guru in order to use demographic information. Just look for the results of studies other people have done and then apply them to your business.

For example, my audience is the mature market…people over 50. There is a lot of data on this group and more studies are being done daily. Some data I found indicated that older people are avid readers. They really like newspapers and magazines. If I was trying to find clients for estate planning services, I would know that I should advertise through newspapers and magazines, rather than spend money on television.

Since my business is internet-based, this information about reading tells me that I should provide a content- rich web site for my older customers, and that mailing a printed newsletter could be another way to develop my customer relationships.

How do you find demographic data? First, find out who might be keeping tabs on your audience. I know, for instance, that AARP surveys people over 50 constantly. AARP makes that information available on its website. I also know that Forrester Research (http://www.forrester.com) does studies on older people, along with many other groups. Yankelovich Partners (http://www.yankelovich.com/) has been a leader in market research on older consumers; and Age Wave (http://www.agewave.com/) collects tons of stats on this market for its website.

Although AARP data is free, research firms sell their information…often at prices that the small business or entrepreneur cannot afford. But, by reading their news releases and the snippets of data they make available to the general public, you can glean quite a bit. To find firms that do research on your demographic, check out MarketResearch.com (http://www.marketresearch.com/).

Another great source are the news release distribution services. You can sign up to receive their news releases by email. Common ones are Internet Wire (http://www.internetwire.com), Internet News Bureau (http://www.newsbureau.com), and PR Web (http://www.prweb.com).

In addition, there are search tools you can use to make your data collection easier. Copernicus (http://www.copernic.com/desktop/index.html) is search software that is downloaded to your computer. It will search most search engines for keywords and phrases. You can get a free trial version to see how it works. Tracerlock (http://www.tracerlock.com) is a web-based service that searches most of the news portals on the web and then alerts you by email when it finds your keywords. I have found this very useful and gladly pay its monthly fee. Spyonit (http://www.spyonit.com) is a free service that will spy on specific URLs or keywords and phrases. It delivers what it finds to you by email.

Don’t overlook the magazines and journals that are specific to your audience. For the older audience, I keep an eye on the AARP magazines, Readers Digest, Aging Today, and several others. Even a regular perusal of the daily newspaper will yield lots of information. USA Today is a great source of quick, easy-to- understand statistical data. Take a look at the NYTimes online, and sign up for The Wall Street Journal’s online version.

By casting your information “net” in this way, you are more likely to come across data that will help you devise better marketing strategies. In addition, you will find a lot of content for your website and ezine.

Now, if I could just figure out how to use the fact that the older market is an up and coming group for pet supplies (it’s true!).

Three Things To Consider Before Full-timing In An RV

    August 28th, 2008

Making the choice to take off on the open road to see the country in a modern RV or motorhome is the dream of many people today. And Americans are increasingly doing just that. It’s an adventurous and free-wheeling lifestyle that appeals to many. But before you sell your home and head out on the open road give some considerations to three things that will have a major impact on your decision.

The first and most important consideration for many is their financial situation and budget. It’s true that living on the road can be done very inexpensively, but it is not free and there are costs associated with it. It’s beyond the scope of this article to completely discuss all of those costs, but it will call for advance thought, research and preparation on your part to be truly prepared financially for the change you wish to make.

The amount of money you have to spend will influence the kind of motorhome that you are able to buy and how you buy it. If you can pay for it all up front that can be a good thing, but if you cannot afford to do that be sure to factor in the costs of monthly payments in your projected budget. Try to clearly lay out a reasonable overall budget for each month in advance. It’s a good idea to talk to RVers who have been on the road for a while and ask them to help you with your budget. Many times they can give you insights into financial considerations that would have never occurred to you otherwise.

The next step is to establish just where you want to go and what you want to see as you travel. It’s amazing how many people actually leave the full-timing lifestyle shortly after beginning it because they jumped into it without much thought beforehand, and once they were on the road discovered that it just didn’t suit them. So think in advance about what you want to do while traveling and whether you feel that it will hold your interest in the long term.

Finally, it’s a great idea to actually rent a motorhome and spend some time in it on short trips first before you even start to think about making the full-timing lifestyle change. If you haven’t spent much time in an RV you really don’t know for sure how you will react to it on an extended basis. It’s not for everyone, so why not invest some time now to see if those kind of accommodations work for over the long haul. You will learn more from just a week or so of actually living in a motorhome than you can from reading volumes about it.

Advance thought and preparation is needed to make the serious commitment necessary to be a successful full-time RVer. But if you do the right kind of research beforehand, it can help you start out on this new adventurous chapter of your life with real confidence.

Sharing the Reins: 10 Reasons To Sell Your Company To Your Employees

    August 26th, 2008

In 1987 I sold my business, South Mountain Company, to my employees (and myself). My sole proprietorship became an employee-owned cooperative corporation. It was a hinge point in the history of the company. Ownership has become available to all employees, enabling people to own and guide their workplace. The responsibility, the power, and the profits all belong to the group of owners.

Shared ownership and control is our method at South Mountain. “Every employee, an owner” is our intention. More than half of our thirty employees are full owners. Each time another comes in, and each time a new management invention encourages more voices to be heard, we move steadily toward the goals of democracy, fairness, and transparency. This is not about a sense of ownership or a sense of control. Corey Rosen of the National Center for Employee Ownership once said that giving employees a “sense” of ownership is like giving them a “sense” of dinner. This is the whole meal.

I first contemplated the conversion to find a way to retain long-time valued employees, who wanted to stay in the company but felt they needed more stake than working for an hourly wage. At the time it was both frightening and exciting. I had the power, and the greatest financial and emotional investment; therefore, I had the most to lose. Under my ownership the company had become a viable, profitable entity with a strong reputation. Sometimes, during the early discussions, it felt like control was slipping away, like I was tugging on the reins of a runaway horse. But it occurred to me that perhaps I had the most to gain. Aside from the lure of clearing this new path and seeing where it led, the possibility of shared responsibility and ownership promised new freedoms for me and new achievements for the company. But the full implications of what I was doing were not yet clear to me.

Our ownership system has indeed turned out to be an important aspect of the stability of the company. People do tend to stay. But there are other reasons why we are lucky to have made this change. Nearly 20 years later, I am fully convinced that the conversion to employee ownership has been a critical factor in the long-term success of our company and an important reason why I think I have the best job in the world. Here are ten reasons why you may wish to consider, sometime soon, sharing the ownership of your business with your employees:

    1. Maturity. Once the entrepreneurial leap of starting a new business has been achieved without constraints, and a viable company has been established, restructuring to employee ownership can be a natural part of the maturation process.

    2. Commitment. Employee ownership encourages a sense of empowerment and promises deeper connections and greater commitment (and length of employment) among the employee owners.

    3. Freedom. The potential loss of control for the founder is more than balanced by the new-found freedom that comes with shared responsibility.

    4. Participation. If you keep the entry fee low enough (we keep ours to “the price of a good used car”) full participation will be encouraged.

    5. Equity. By using a system of internal capital accounts through which the profit is shared and equity is measured, employee owners can track their stake in the company and accumulate a nest egg that they take with them when they depart.

    6. Effectiveness. Over 11,000 companies nationally, with 8.5 million employees (and $400 billion in assets held by these employees) have some form of employee ownership. Maybe these companies know something.

    7. Legacy. Employee ownership is the ticket to good legacy and smooth transitions. By sharing ownership early on, the difficult question that comes when founders are ready to retire - what to do with this business - is avoided.

    8. Justice. The inherent injustice of our current economic system (all wealth goes to the shareholders) can be tackled, through employee ownership, by shifting wealth to the real stakeholders, those who actually create it.

    9. Productivity. A democratic workplace gives meaning to our work lives and encourages good performance. A happy workforce is a productive one.

    10. Accountability. If the people who make the decisions are the people who will also bear the consequences of those decisions, better decisions are likely to result.

In thinking about the dynamics of employee ownership, I am reminded of the way the Roman army handled daily rations. Rations were in the form of large loaves of bread, each sufficient to feed two soldiers. This presented a problem, since when the soldiers had little to do, they tended to fight among themselves, particularly over who got the bigger half of the loaf. The Romans developed a nifty solution. They passed a regulation that one soldier had to divide the loaf and the other chose which half to take. Employee ownership is a similarly self-enforcing system. Each owner’s actions on behalf of the others, and the company, are actions on his or her own behalf at the same time.

I understand that employee ownership is not the only way to encourage more responsible and more democratic business practices. But it’s clear to me that at South Mountain, due to employee ownership, we’ve become, at once, better problem solvers and better dreamers. There’s a lot to be said for ownership and the responsibility it encourages. As someone once observed, “In the history of mankind, nobody has ever washed a rented car.”

John Abrams is the president of South Mountain Company, an employee-owned build/design firm on Martha’s Vineyard. This article has been adapted with permission from his new book, The Company We Keep: Reinventing Small Business for People, Community, and Place (Chelsea Green Publishing) in which he explores the role of small business in promoting community, creating social equity, and maintaining ecological balance.

Taking on a Franchise or Starting Your Own Business

    August 26th, 2008

The world of business startups is rife with option. You can take on a franchise or start your own business from scratch. Different approaches suit different people.

Pick up a business magazine and your will find lots of franchises for sale.Franchises are everywhere. Franchises are typically founded on a tried and tested business model. When you buy into a franchise, many aspects of the business including marketing are taken care of off. There are many different franchises available. Some will give you the business name, equipment and everything you need for start up, others only give you the basics and you still have to buy or lease a location, purchase equipment and the inventory you will need.

Some key drawbacks of buying a franchise however are that they are typically inflexible in terms to making it your own, and of course the initial outlay. Visit the Key Mergers website for more information or if you would like to f you would like to buy a business or even to sell one.

Starting your own business from scratch however means that you can grow the business organically over time, you can limit your initial outlay and you can be as creative with the direction of your business as you like. However, your model may not be tried and tested and you will likely have to develop your own support network from the ground up along with your business.

the reality is, the factors determining whether to buy a franchise or follow your own path are multi-dimensional There is a trade-off between creativity, fleximility, risk and reward.

Best Laptop Computers Officially Mass Market

    August 25th, 2008

Gaming laptops used to only be attainable from certain resellers. I pretty much doubt they shipped in any earth shattering volumes but they sure produced tons of cash for the system builders. These were the type of laptop computers desired by all but the expense was just too high. They were simply the best laptops that the technology was able to provide at that time. They most likely were not massive sellers though because I guess the large number of us buy laptops that we can easily afford. Recently all that has looked to have changed as the big players have discovered the opportunities in gaming laptops.

Laptops for gaming are usually not affordable by most of us and international companies know they can prosper from the massive profit margins even more with their economies of scale. At this point in time the profit margins on the majority of laptop computers are so narrow that this constitutes as an excellent opportunity to get back the gross margins. Additionally they know they can persuade us to buy laptops like these more easily than small system builders. I’m trying to think what the the reaction from littler manufacturers will be. I’m already witnessing some price reductions. In my opinion the big brands will control the market trends. I reckon prospects would trust the bigger companies more if they purchase something costly.

In my opinion these companies are churning out the best laptops at this point in time. Still though, for the minor league retailers this should turn out to be positive. Most of the time the pre made notebooks are powerful but not fast enough and a few customers don’t like that. These types of buyers usually are well grounded in the technology and will compare spec for spec. In my point of view I think consumers worry more about the performance instead of styling.

Plainly what’s happening here could do good for us in the long term. In the end, the costs will be dropped even further making the latest technology to be a choice that we will all be able to afford. Do not hold me to that though as all sorts could happen in the laptop computer industry. I guess technology is getting more better but the latest laptops will usually be pricey. Established companies have involved themselves with the gaming laptops niche and only time will tell what the outcome is.

    Ringtone Composers

    August 24th, 2008

A ringtone composer, also known as melody composer, allows a mobile user to compose a new ringtone simply by typing a series of keys on the phone to get a melody. With a ringtone composer you can write very complex music and have it converted into a ringtone in about 2-3 minutes. That way, if you want a ringtone that nobody has ever heard before, or one that you cannot readily find, you can simply invent it.

You can write very complex music in ringtone composer and have it converted into a ringtone in about 2-3 minutes.

Cell phone manufacturers incorporate exclusive software just for the ringtone composing. ‘Nokring’ is one example manufactured by NOKIA. Today cell phone manufacturers like Sony Ericsson are providing the very latest polyphonic ringtone composer in which mobile users need not enter all the notes of the polyphonic ringtone for a new melody. The latest composer mixes the notes resulting in pretty good melodies.

Not all ringtones need composers. Usually ringtone composer will be available in one of the cell phone’s menu options called “Settings” or sometimes in “Tone Settings.” Just press the “New Tone” or “My Melodies” key followed by the “Edit” option to edit the current ringtone. Then get a “Keypress sequence” compatible with the ringtone compose. Finally, the same keypress sequence is typed in the same order. Now press “Ok” or “Done” and follow other instructions, if any. In some cases, you can adjust the tempo of the new ringtone, which is then saved. Generally it’s a good idea to delete a previously entered ringtone before replacing it with a new melody.
