Women in Sudan: Voices of Hope

April 18th, 2009

Sudan was once called the “breadbasket” of Africa; a land of
enormous potential. Where people from diverse religions and
ethnicities co-existed in relative peace. And although most
people seldom thought about it and knew it only as “some
country” in Africa, those who came in contact with its culture
fell instantly in love with the generosity and good-nature they
found there. Today, the image is entirely different. Today when
we hear the name Sudan we think of dictatorship, famine, a
gruesome civil war, a hub of terrorism, persecution, injustice,
and of course, Darfur. Today the image is one of hunger, death,
and massive human suffering. As a woman, I feel a strong sense
of despair at the thought of this suffering and the sad reality
that the sufferers are mostly women. War does unthinkable things
to women and their families. As a result of the war in the
south, almost two million southerners were forced to desert
their homes and flee as refugees to the less-welcoming north.
Most of these were women and children. Once in the north, they
are forced to live in camps lacking all the necessities of a
decent living. In order to survive, women have had to compete
for very limited work opportunities like washers or maids. Some
have resorted to prostitution or the brewing of alcohol–two
occupations that are considered serious crimes and often result
in jail time. When their mothers are jailed, their children are
left homeless. So authorities have allowed mothers to keep their
children with them in prisons. What results is a family living
in poorly equipped, unhealthy, cramped and unsanitary
environments. In the north, where things are considerably more
comfortable and safe, people are still not without hardship and
suffering. In my recent talk with Loloa Ibrahim, Director of The
Sudanreach Women’s Foundation, I learned that “the media often
paints a picture of the northern “Arab” surrounded by luxury; a
slave owner, and a brutal oppressor. But the reality is that
northerners, especially women, are suffering greatly albeit in
an entirely different way. True, they are not subjected the same
level of violence but almost 90 percent of them live under the
poverty line. Many women have been widowed by the war, many die
of preventable diseases, many see their children or siblings
dragged away by the NIF war machine and forced to fight in a war
that very few people believe in. Many of them have their
children returned to them in body bags. And all of them don’t
have the voice or the power to protest these injustices.” Like
many of us, Ms. Ibrahim was appalled by the situation in Sudan;
the vicious destruction of the south, the poverty and loss of
hope in the North, and the unspeakable human disaster in the
west. Last year she founded The Sudan-Reach Women’s Foundation
as a way to allow women to band together and combat poverty and
injustice. Now in its second year, the foundation has raised
sizeable funds and is already helping numerous Sudanese Women.
“We are fortunate,” Ibrahim says “and heartened by the
overwhelming support we have had from other organizations and
from everyday citizens. American women in particular have been
among our most generous supporters.” In such a globalized world
as ours it is almost impossible to ignore what is happening in
Sudan. In the U.S., numerous new organizations have sprouted
just for the sole purpose of seeking justice for Darfur.
Savedarfur.org is one of them, and of course the dynamic student
organization known as STAND–Students Take Action Now Darfur.
“Our vision is to return Sudan to the glory of its past,” says
Ibrahim “But our strategy is to accomplish this through the
infinitely creative, powerful, and resilient spirit of women.
When we empower a woman we can empower a family, a community,
and a country.” When or how Sudan can return to its previous
glory is a difficult question that encourages a host of complex
answers, doubts, and uncertainties. But the hopes of so many
Sudanese citizens, myself included, is that the attention of the
world, the giving spirit of everyday people, and the tireless
efforts of concerned, global organizations, will help Sudan
emerge from years of poverty and injustice with women at the
forefront of its victory.

Why He May Be Cheating On You

Why He May Be Cheating On You

There could be all sorts of reasons known only to your man, but there are also those reasons in which women may contribute to, such as: You Let Yourself Go, You Lost Yourself In Him, or You Have No Ambition along with many others. Sometimes women live for their men. They spend all their waking time taking care of them, and at the end of the day, they still haven’t accomplished anything for themselves.

You are thinking all alone that this is what he wants in a woman, when all along, he wants the complete opposite. Women get caught up too often trying to be the woman that they think their men want. He wants you to be you. After all, the woman you were when you two met, is who he wants you to be. Never pretend to be something you’re not, because you’ll have to keep up this charade for the remainder of the relationship. That’s hard to keep up. You start to get relaxed and too comfortable in the relationship and that’s when the “real you” starts to gradually come out. Be yourself in the beginning and eliminate the future problems of him going out and maybe cheating on you because you’ve changed.

Women also essentially end up resenting their men, because they have put their goals and dreams aside. The women make their choices, but somewhere in between, they become unhappy with the choices they have made. They start acting depressed, miserable, and sad all the time, because they are not happy. This is when he starts to get tired of looking at you miserable everyday. He starts seeing a woman who makes him laugh again, who he starts to have fun with and where does this leave you? Still at home miserable thinking that he is feeling sorry for you. He is. He is feeling sorry that he has to tell you that it’s over.

So, in the initial beginning of the relationship, both parties need to be in agreement of what they want and expect from each other.

Quality Fitness Equipment and Fitness Supplements Are the Key

April 18th, 2009

Different people will deliberate different characteristics when in the market place for home gym equipment. Home gyms, much like individuals come in all shapes and sizings. There are no shortfalls of thoughts on what creates for a quality home gym. I am going to give my idea on what I consider are a couple of important considerations when selecting home gyms.

Another thing that I noticed the previous time I viewed home gym at a local shop, besides the lousy quality, is that so numerous home gyms are not really home gyms. Truly, they are individual pieces of fitness equipment ofttimes formulated to do 1 or 2 workouts real comfortably. Or they seem designed to work out just legs or to work out only chest, or to work out just shoulders, or exercise merely abdominal muscles. In Truth, there seems to be a tremendous number of abdominal fitness equipment sold on late-night television 30 minutes advertisements.

Now, I am not alleging that working an individual bodypart is necessarily a poor thought. But it looks to me that if someone wants a home gym, then you ought be trying for something that so umpteen home gyms fail to offer, and that is the versatility. Also, what seems to take place a lot also is that if the home gym does provide versatility, it is chintzily made.

So, what I would look for to try to weed out from the unlimited possibilities of home gyms available are two things. Look for quality and expect for versatility. It goes without articulating that, you need to be the judge of what to pay. The better the quality and the more versatile the larger the cost. But the net result is that if you are serious about not only getting into shape but remaining in shape you need to purchase home gym equipment that will last and tough.

It is just so important, I trust, to choose home gym equipment that will allow you to have for variety in your workout program. Muscles grow habituated to executing the same exercise repeatedly. As a result, once your body adapts results come much harder. In fact, lack of results may cause someone to quit. It is very motivational when a person looks in the mirror and keeps to view success. To get those results you want to look at well-built home gyms contrived to last, work more than 1 bodypart, and allow for multiple exercises for each body part. Eat right, train hard and use proper fitness supplements to reach your goals.

Bankruptcy Alternatives

April 16th, 2009

You would be surprised at the total number of individuals that deal with monetary set backs in their life. For that reason, outstanding debt will likely arise. Individuals can meet these drawbacks due to employment loss, divorce, unexpected death of a family or just bad personal financial management. Small businesses usually run into trouble within the first two years of business. To blame for a business bankruptcy can stretch from increased competition, mistakes, loss of large clients to identify a few. No matter the origin, unpaid commitments may lead to bankruptcy. Nonetheless, there are bankruptcy alternatives that might save your individual credit report and your company credit.

Insolvency is defined as a lack of ability of an organization or a family to pay back money owed to credit givers. If or when an individual files, the debtor is made to to release all nonexempt stock and property for sale. While personal items are retained, you likewise pledge a particular part of your attained earnings to the creditors based on a decided repayment agreement. Your credit report score will be about zero for ages, meaning that you will not be capable of incurring financing for several private or business for a extended period of time.

Troubles such as these can stimulate incredible concern. Dissolution judicial proceedings are extremely harsh and can lead to bitter ideas and deeds. Searching for preferential directions out of a harmful position prior to going to bankruptcy court of law is better. Debt negotiation could perhaps be just the option for you.

You will perhaps ask: “How come my debt holders are are willing to tolerate debt settlement?” The truth is that any alternative is beneficial to the lender compared to bankruptcy. Bankruptcy alternatives are worthwhile to yourself as the borrower and the lender as the moneyman. The lender is able to recoup at least a part of the moneys that the lending institution are owed and you’re capable to manage. Allowing a debt liquidation program that is a great deal less than the beginning total you initially owed is far better than nothing at all.

Debt resolution can be an exceedingly advantageous option compared to insolvency for you, as a private citizen or a business proprietor. In particular when you are taking the future into account. Financial insolvency should be averted at all costs considering the fact that finding credit will be almost unworkable for any private or business enterprise you perhaps will experience later down the road. In that respect, there is not much of a fresh start; insolvency stays with you wherever you go. Irrespective of what variety of debt you have obtained, always look out for a debt settlement program as the initial choice when you are contemplating financial insolvency.

Volunteers Celebrating Survivorship: Answering The Call To Save Lives

April 14th, 2009

“I get a lot of hugs that I hardly deserve,” confessed 2004 Komen Ozark Race for the Cure® Co-Chair Walt Eilers, whose alter ego is President of Terrapin Consulting, LLC. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of women I’ve encountered who are affected by breast cancer,” he continued. “My volunteer experience has taught me that you can have a great time, make a great impact and make lifetime friends. Komen is a part of the fabric of Northwest Arkansas that I have really come to love.”

Currently, NWA leads the state in breast cancer, so there is a glaring need to draw together resources to finance mammography and treatment for those either uninsured or underinsured as well as awareness education. A celebration and demonstration of hope, courage and support in the fight against breast cancer, the Race scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2004, at the NWA Mall in Fayetteville, represents one of over 100 Race for the Cure® sites and remains the flagship of the region’s fundraising efforts.

With over 11,500 men, women and children expected to participate this year, the Race requires scads of volunteers to help with preparations, including race registration, operations, hospitality, training, development, venue planning and marketing. These volunteers work behind the scenes year-round to coordinate a successful event with a low cost-to-income ratio, making it possible for an impressive 75% of the proceeds to fund local breast cancer projects and 25% to fund national research through the Susan G. Komen Foundation Grant Program.

“We are one of the few Races still growing,” revealed Fayetteville resident Pam Grondin, who sits on both the Steering Committee and Operations Committee and focuses her energies on ensuring the Race venue is aesthetically sound and user-friendly for survivors, sponsors, spectators, volunteers and Race participants. “We have to change every year because our numbers, sponsors and money are growing. I’m simply amazed.”

According to the volunteers, the day of the Race is one of resonant marvel. “The reward for volunteering,” declared 3-year volunteer Andrea Taylor, Marketing Manager at the NWA Mall and member of the Race Operations Committee, “is the feeling you have on Race day when the survivors parade through the venue. Period.” Remembering last year’s Race, Eilers recounted, “I was engulfed by a sea of survivors in pink shirts, their positive spirit and their appreciation. I was surrounded by them and saw, from a new perspective, the impact of Komen.”

Grondin also enjoys sharing in the mirth exuded by the survivors, of every shape and size, as they march triumphantly together and beam infectiously at the smiling faces of the onlookers. “It’s so uplifting!” she described emphatically. In addition, she advocates the Race for the networking opportunities and camaraderie it affords the participants. The Race allows people beginning their battles with breast cancer to network with survivors, fostering an invaluable empathy, building lifelong relationships and ideally increasing the number of survivors in the following year.

Taylor boils down volunteering for the Komen Ozark Race for the Cure® to “making a difference,” and Eilers deems it as a “chance to return the grace with which you have been blessed.” Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Race, and every hour of time donated signifies one step closer to the ultimate goal: to find a cure for breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. “Take a year to volunteer, and see how good it makes you feel,” Grondin challenged. “You may be hooked, and we’d love to have you.”

It’s Your Day To Be the Fashion Queen At The Beach

April 11th, 2009

It’s that time of year when we pack up our bags and head to the beach for the day to enjoy those warm sunrays and the refreshing sound of the lapping water.

So what constitutes a good beach wardrobe. Well there are certain essentials that none of us forget. On goes the swimsuit and bathing suit cover, flip flops on our feet.

Beach bag has been packed with the essentials - sunglasses, floppy hat, towel and a good book. Great - got the basics covered but what about the rest.

So if we are so prepared for a day at the beach, why is it by the time we get home we look pretty worn. Here are some helpful tips to make your day at the beach fun and keep you looking fashion fresh all day and all the way home.

First before you leave home, if you’ve got long hair pull it into a high pony tail or fun knot. Use some funky hair accessories that will stay in place when you’re swimming. Try a fun colored bobble or some firm fastening clips in bright summer colors.

If you pull your hair up your neck will stay cool and you’ll look fresh all day with your neat hairdo.

Second slather yourself in sunscreen before leaving the house, then toss the sunscreen in your bag so you can reapply after a swim or every few hours.

A sunburn is not only unhealthy and painful, it’s unattractive, so don’t let yourself turn into the lobster of the day. Your sunscreen should be a SPF of 15. It doesn’t hurt to use a strong SPF on your face or your entire body if you burn easily.

Your beach bag should be large enough to hold your supplies for the day. Why not get something fun and fashionable to keep you looking fashion fresh. Make sure you’ve got all the daily essentials in your bag - sunglasses, sunscreen, a good book, a floppy hat, some lip gloss, and any other makeup touch ups you’ll want.

If you plan to wear eye makeup make sure it’s waterproof. Stay away from heavy foundations. If you must apply something use a bronzer moisturizer. It’s also a good idea to bring lip balm with an SPF15 to protect your lips.

It never hurts to put some moisturizer in the bag. Include a snack and plenty of fluids. It’s important not to get dehydrated.

Okay great we’ve got the basics covered now what about the wardrobe basics? If you’re planning to wear a swimsuit it’s usually easiest to put it on at home, that way you’re not chasing down change rooms.

So great - first on goes the swimsuit. Now what to wear for a cover? Well you’ve got plenty of choices. A tank top and shorts, tank and skort, or a nice light cotton dress all work well over top. Choose something that’s easy to put on and take off, and choose fabrics that breathe to keep you cool.

I also suggest including a long sleeved cotton blouse just incase you start to burn you can protect your shoulders and arms.

If you’re planning on heading out later in the day without returning home you might want to toss a pair of jeans or long skirt into your bag.

If your outing is going to extend into the evening you’ll want to include a sweater for the cooler evening air.

If you’re worried about your evening wear getting sandy or wet at the beach, then place them in a separate bag and leave them in the trunk of your car. That way you are guaranteed they’ll remain fresh.

My favorite beach look is this. And what’s perfect is it keeps me looking fashion fresh throughout the day and takes me right into the evening. First I like a swimsuit that’s got lots of support and is bright and cheerful.

I throw a fitted tank on top and throw on a loose flouncy long skirt. The long skirt serves me through the evening and also works great to cover up if I’m starting to burn. I choose a lightweight material in a darker color with a pattern that accents the colors in my swimsuit.

Flip flops are my footwear. Depending on where I’m heading after the beach I choose either a basic pair or one of my funky pair with rhinestones or crystals. Easy to walk in, feet breath, and terrific for an evening out.

I keep a fitted light weight sweater in my car, and take a long sleeved cotton blouse down to the beach. I usually choose a long sleeved and long length blouse because it’s versatile. I can knot it to create a short blouse, wear it long as a beach cover, and put it on if I start to burn on my upper body.

I usually choose white or a soft pastel depending on my other colors. I like white because it’s cool to wear and refreshing to look at. Every year I buy a fun new beach tote that’s big enough for the beach but not too big as to take it with me for an evening out. I like a fun bag that’s full of character.

Since I always feel naked without my jewelry I wear fashion jewelry to the beach. That way should I loose something I won’t be out a lot of money and I won’t feel so bad. I like to keep the earrings simple and elegant.

I may or may not wear a necklace. Often I’ll toss a funky wood necklace in the bag to add to the evening outfit. I like to wear a couple of fashion rings just to add the finishing touches. Now if you’re fussy about tan lines you’ll probably want to forgo the rings. I toss my watch in the bottom of my bag so I can put it on later.

That’s it - simple is the key. Keep your beach wardrobe choices simple but fashionable. Think ahead so you can go from beach to an evening out without hassle. Remember to always make your fashion statement!

Set Yourself Up for Success!

Set Yourself Up For Success!
~ By Fran Briggs

Here’s a great way to programand set yourself up for success in advance. It is one of many of what I call, New Empowering Habit Plans (TM). A New Empowering Habit Plan is a formula for achieving success in any given area of your life.It requires a minimum of 21 consecutive days of implementation. Why 21 days? Because research by behavioral scientists and “Mothers of five”has proved thatit takes at least 21 days to establish a habit.

This NEHP starts with taking the first 15-30 minutes before you get out of bed to planand visualize your successful day on paper. Remember we agreed that it takes at least 21 consecutive days to establish a habit? Commit to do this NEHP for at least 21 consecutive days.

What if you were to develop a fun and exciting New Empowering Habit Plan taking just a few minutes every day to plan and visualize your successful day on paper? In doing so, you would be able to project any obstacles or consequences. More importantly, you could constructand program your success. With this invaluable information, youcould literally set yourself up for success by planning and seeing the future in advance.

“Exactly How do I do this?”
One of the exciting things about this NEHP is that it is not an “exact science.” In fact, it’s not a science at all.Consider it uniquely yours. It can be as simple as keeping a pen, pencil, notebook or note pad by your bed. As soon as you wake up, grab your writng/drawing utensil. Then, you might want to close your eyes as you meditate, pray or regain your faculties (if your not a morning person). I suggest you take a couple minutes and literally run your entire day in your mind. Visualize; really see yourself, succeeding … all day long.

Win, Write Or Draw!
Now, open your eyes and begin doing your day on paper. The real magic of this NEHP lies in the power you manifest when you put pen/pencil to paper. This has been long proven to amend our thinking. Why not make a point to amend for great thinking? I’m not going to get into that right side brain/left side brain stuff. I’ll keep it simple and say … you will win, when you write, draw or combine the two, to construct and program your successful day.

Be very clear and put your appointments to succeed in chronological order. Cultivate an unshakable expectation to succeed. Put magic into the mundane! For example, in your 9:00 a.m. slot where you would normally anticipate contact with an obnoxious supervisor, draw them with a smile as she tells you your being promoted. Zoom in on the smiles, pleasant demeanors and positive energy you both exchange. Or, maybe you feel more comfortable writing a mini-goal or powerful positive affirmation at least ten times. Really believe it. In your 7:20 p.m. slot, you may write down: “I go 4 for 4 and play a flawless left field tonight.” Once you are crystal-clear on how you are going to set yourself up for success, you reaffirm your ability to make it happen.

WARNING: You May Get More Than You Project!
It’s said that long before Jim Carrey made it BIG, and before he even appeared on In Living Color,” he walked up to the Hollywood Hills one day. There, he wrote a check to himself, and put it in his wallet. The amount on the check was for ten million dollars. In the memo he wrote in, “For services rendered.” Today as most of you already know, Jim Carrey makes a minimum of twenty-million dollars per film.

In February, 2003, I wrote down on paper that I would sell my house in three weeks for $280,000. The new owners would be first-time homeowners-not investors. My house sold in 11 days and for 19 thousand dollars more than the asking price. The new owners are a happy family of three and are very happy in their first home.

I have two great friends who (seemingly) have the ability to win jackpots at will using this NEHP. But this particular New Empowering Habit Plan is not just “all about the money.” It has much more power than that. I’ve manifested, fulfilling, loving and meaningful relationships; world-wide publications; vacations; empowering strongholds; businesses, 4 for 4 flawless defense softball games and just plain fun! I sincerely believe you can too!

To Your Success!

Cosmetic surgery: do you really want one?

April 8th, 2009

Advertisements of cosmetic surgery have been seen in newspapers, featured on television programs, displayed on the faces of celebrities.

Cosmetic surgery offers to improve many areas of the body. But as with any surgery, cosmetic procedures involve certain risks and limitations.

To increase the likelihood of a satisfying outcome, first examine your reasons for wanting cosmetic surgery.

Then educate yourself about what you can realistically expect, the benefits and risks involved and how to find a qualified surgeon. Understand these issues to make the best decision for you. Why consider cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery aims to change your appearance by altering parts of your body that function normally but make you unhappy. This differs from reconstructive surgery, which doctors use to restore the appearance and function of body parts affected by congenial defects.

If you’re dissatisfied with your appearance, you may be interested in cosmetic surgery. Despite possible risks, and though each person’s experience is unique, some research suggests that both may be likely following a cosmetic procedure.

Those who seek out cosmetic surgery generally have a positive self-image, despite also being unusually focused on one or more aspects of their appearance. In fact, some may even feel better about their overall appearance.

Postoperative surveys find that those satisfied with the results perceive benefits including: Greater self-confidence Improved social lives, sex lives and interpersonal relationships Increased enjoyment of leisure activities

Is cosmetic surgery for you?

Cosmetic surgery outcomes are most likely to be successful if you’re in good overall health. It’s also best if you:

Have realistic expectations. Anticipate improvement, not perfection. If you expect cosmetic surgery to turn you into a movie star, you’re bound to be disappointed.

The spectacular results you see in the rich and famous can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Also don’t count on surgery to save a rocky relationship, gain a promotion or make you the life of the party.
