Telecoms Package to Improve the Scenario of Broadband Services in Britain
A reappraisal of telecoms laws have been voted by European parliament members, and this will have significant impact on internet usage in
The vote has been in the news regarding a recent controversy about severing the connections of those who partake in the illegal downloading of copyright files. This disconnection tactic is being seen by users as an extreme measure. The Telecoms Package, which won majority votes (a massive 510 as against 40), has considered ‘internet freedom’ as a fundamental right. However, critics are doubtful about the effectiveness of the package and its ability to solve the immediate problems facing the industry and the users.
Equitable distribution of mobile broadband services across the EU is an essential feature of the package. Other features include the future development of mobile broadband with advanced digital technology, and promotion of coordination between different controlling bodies in the EU.
EU commissioner for information, society and the media, Viviane Reding said that the telecoms package would bridge the gap between haves and have-nots with respect to broadband connectivity by ensuring proper allocation of broadband spectrum and actualizing the broadband-for-all dream, so that everyone gets access to broadband at affordable costs (see broadband best deals).
Reding added that spectrum allocation will focus on making the latest technology and premium services available to consumers.
