Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s)

In the following article we will attempt to shed some light into these questions and give you all the information you need to make an informed choice.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids: Do they belong in natural skin care products?

    What are they?

    How are they useful to our skin?

    Are they a natural ingredient in skin care?

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s) are Fruit acids, which are weak organic acids derived from various sources such as, grapes, apples, sugar cane, maple, pineapple, papaya, willow bark, lemon, lime, sour milk, blackberries, yoghurt and cider, and play an important role in skin care.
Fruit acids are natural exfoliants that perform a number of functions at the level of the stratum corneum on the skin’s surface:

    Loosen and dissolve dead cells from the skin’s surface

    Help to regenerate new skin cells,

    Aid in the control of acne, smooth rough dry skin, improve the texture of sun-damaged and aging skin and

    Retain moisture, which leaves your skin healthy and vibrant.

Naturally contained AHA’s are basically a good thing, unfortunately, many companies are using concentrated extracts, or worse still, synthetically manufactured AHA’s or BHA’s (beta hydroxy acids), and that is not a good thing.
When scientists comes across a ‘new substance’, so to speak, they have a tendency to want to make it better than nature’s version… more concentrated for quicker results… and so on. Unfortunately, this usually brings with it side effects and sometimes actual physical damage.

A natural ingredient - just what exactly does that mean?

Does it mean it is a substance that nature created and it has been added to a product in order to make that product natural? No, a natural ingredient is an ingredient that is, where ever possible, present in it’s natural form, for example AHA’s can be extracted and then added to a product, thereby the maker of that product can claim it contains ‘Natural ingredients’. Or the AHA’s can be use in a product in the form of an extract of Papaya with all the other ingredients present in Papaya fruit. This is a more balanced set of ingredients that work together (synergistically) to achieve a desired effect, thus it is a truly natural ingredient.

Let me give you an example: Aspirin (a very commonly used pain killer) is derived from the bark of the white Willow tree. The substance or the active ingredient is called Salicylic acid, a BHA. This is the stuff that reduces pain. It is also the stuff that can cause Stomach ulcers….

Now, the herbal extract of the white Willow bark does not (or is much less likely to) cause Stomach ulcers. Why? Because the herbal extract contains many other ingredients that are contained in the bark, which the extraction process brings out. Some of these substances are mucilaginous (Porridge is mucilaginous) which means they are slippery and when taken internally, they cover the membrane of the Stomach (the lining) and prevent the salicylic acid from causing irritation or ulceration - clever, isn’t she, that Mother Nature woman?

Sometimes you will hear these additional ingredients referred to as “phyto-chemicals”. This is very current topic today with respect to Vitamins and other ‘natural’ supplements.

What does all this have to do with natural skin care? Well, as I have written before. Natural skin care is not necessarily natural and one could debate back and forth what ‘natural’ is, or what it should be. One thing is certain, natural skin care products should not contain any ‘un-natural’ ingredients, be they synthetically produced or in ‘purified / isolated form’. Natural should be as close as possible to the way it is found in nature.

That is not to say one should not use Vitamin E as a principal ingredient in a cream, but it should not be of a synthetically derived form. Wheat germ oil, for example, is very high in Vitamin E and contains many other phyto-chemicals, which are nourishing to the skin.

Tithing for Life

Tithing is the practice of giving away 10% of your income (tithe means “tenth”), usually to a charitable cause. Some people absolutely swear by the practice of tithing and consider it integral to the process of wealth creation.

Benefits of tithing include:

  • Overcoming scarcity thinking. Tithing helps you develop a greater sense of abundance. By giving away 10% of your income, you’re programming your subconscious to believe in abundance thinking. This can make you more open and receptive to receiving money. If you think abundance, you’re more likely to experience abundance.
  • Supporting a worthy cause. If the money you tithe is put to good use, you can financially support a cause that’s important to you.
  • Achieve greater wealth. Whenever you earn more money, your tithes increase as well, so your cause(s) receive greater financial support. This can be extremely motivating for some people.

Personally I think some people get too caught up in the specific practice of tithing and lose sight of its real purpose. Too often I see people feeling guilty about not tithing (or not tithing enough). Or they develop a love-hate relationship with the practice, feeling compelled to tithe even though they have mixed feelings about it. They feel they should tithe, but they don’t completely want to tithe.

It’s perfectly OK not to tithe. If you don’t feel a desire to tithe, don’t beat yourself up about it. Let go of the guilt, and forgive yourself. Not tithing doesn’t make you a bad person.

Tithing must be done from a state of abundance. If you harbor thoughts of scarcity as you tithe, then tithing will only become a source of incongruence and pain for you.

Consider the true purpose of tithing. The purpose of tithing is to serve the highest good of all. But tithing is only one of many ways to serve the highest good, certainly not the only way. There are many other ways to serve the greater good. Here are some ideas:

  • Give time. Donate time to a cause you find is worthy. Perform an act of service.
  • Give information. Write articles or start a blog to share your knowledge freely with others who may benefit by it.
  • Give talents. Use your skills to help someone who can’t afford to pay for them.
  • Give acknowledgement. Smile at people. Give someone a kind word today. Acknowledge a job well done.
  • Give encouragement. Be supportive of those around you. Let others know you care about them.
  • Give thoughts. Intend the best for other people. Pray or meditate for others if those practices have meaning for you.
  • Give touch. Give someone a pat on the back, a handshake, or a hug. Give a massage. Give a passionate kiss.

Money is not the only way to give. In my opinion money is actually the weakest form of giving in comparison to the above. I find other forms of giving to be much more enjoyable.

Give Congruently

I used to tithe money to charities in the past, but I was never fully comfortable with that practice because there were many charitable causes I felt uneasy about supporting. For example, I don’t feel comfortable supporting charities that conduct medical research via torturously cruel experiments on animals. I don’t see those charities as truly working “for the highest good of all,” and it would be incongruent with my personal values to support them. I understand completely that others have different opinions on the subject, but if I am to support a charity, I require that its cause be congruent with my values. If I’m going to support the front end, there must be a back-end that I can support as well. If the cause is somehow rooted in cruelty, war, greed, or other scarcity thinking, I’m not going to water those roots.

The intention you put into your giving is more important than the particular means of giving. Give in a manner which makes you feel good, not guilty. And if you don’t currently have a viable outlet for giving that aligns with your values and makes you feel good, then put out the intention for a new outlet for giving to come into your life.

Beyond Tithing

As I’ve driven myself to shed scarcity thinking, I eventually dropped the practice of tithing in favor of aligning my entire life with what I perceive to be the highest good of all. I realized that if I’m giving money to a worthy cause, then perhaps I’m also telling myself that my own life is inherently a less worthy cause. This isn’t necessarily true of you, but when I looked within I saw that it was true of me. I felt better about the 10% I was giving away than the 90% I was using myself. I knew I could do better than that.

Instead of tithing to “better” causes, I wanted my life to become a tithe-worthy cause of its own. It saddened me to feel that only 10% of my money was serving the greater good. Sure it’s better than 0%, but why not 20% or 50% or even 100%? In order to reach those higher percentages, I had to transform my work completely, which I consciously did last year when moving from game development to personal development. In this capacity I feel I’m able to serve the greater good more directly and purposefully.

Achieving Balance

One of my challenges has been to develop a balance between giving and receiving. Over the past year, I’ve pushed very hard on the giving side while denying myself much receiving. While I’ve worked very hard this year (writing more than 200 original articles and building web traffic from zero to 1,000,000 page views per month), I also made the least amount of money this year than I have in the previous past five years (at least so far). But I came to realize that it wasn’t sensible to martyr myself for this cause and that I was succumbing to limited either-or thinking. What I really needed to do was to balance the acts of giving and receiving. To me this means inviting greater abundance into my life while simultaneously placing that abundance in service to the greater good.

I used to think that optimizing giving would automatically force receiving to be suboptimal, and vice versa. I’ve since learned that was a false assumption. Both optima actually share the same location. To think there’s a conflict between them is to create that conflict.

I no longer think in terms of giving vs. receiving. They’ve become the same thing for me.

There is a place where giving is painless and receiving is selfless. Find that place in your own life, and move towards it. As you do this, your scarcity thinking will dissolve, and a mindset of abundance will flow through your reality.

Asian Skin Pigmentation

Those whose Ethnic background are from South Asia i.e. Indian, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc; have much darker skin than their northern caucasian counterpart because they have an increased amount of melanin in the skin. Melanin is specifically the pigment in the skin and it protects the skin from sunlight. This actually helps to keep Asian people looking younger than people with white skin. The melanin pigment also slows down the aging process. However as Asian peple age their skin can conceive unbalanced pigmented. This can be seen as darker patches. Unbalanced pigmentation can also be caused by swelling or irratation. If a part of the skin becomes inflamed or red due to being bit by an insect or from an acne pimple, once the redness or inflammation subsides a brown area can be left behind.

Asians although in general are no more oily than caucasian skin but according to dermatologists, Asian women tend to have more oilier skin than recent Asian immigrants. Some dermatologists contribute this on the grounds that there is higher fat content in the diet. There is a theory that diet does not directly affect skin condition, except when it is poor enough to affect one’s overall health.

    The answer is yes, especially if you have problem skin. The skin is one of the body’s main organs and can eliminate around 10% of all waste from the body. It does this mainly through sweating, we loose moisture through the skin 24/7 even though we’re not aware of it. It’s a natural process and of course your facial skin is included in this.

    So what is detoxification (detox)? To put it very simply it’s “getting the garbage (toxins) out of your body without putting any more in”. Toxins can be heavy metals, pesticides, too much vitamin A or chemical residues from the polluted air we breathe or the junk food we eat, which contains sugar salt, artificial colors and flavors.

    All these are stored mainly in the fatty tissues of the body and can play havoc with your health if they build up to excess or if you have a sensitivity.

    If you suffer with acne, or if your skin is dull, rough or blotchy, a detox could be exactly what you need. Other symptoms of toxic overload can be lethargy and frequent headaches or simply feeling below par. Detoxing will not only help your skin but the other major elimination organ, the liver. In fact your whole system will benefit!

    There are as many detox methods as weight loss diets and some of them can be quite expensive! But we don’t need to spend a lot of money on detox, it’s something we can do ourselves if we know how. So to that end, I’ll give you a really simple (& cheap!) detox that you can try.

    Detox a la Wendy!

    We are aiming here to rid the body of garbage therefore it’s important to make the diet as light and healthy as possible but to have something you can live with for at least 2 weeks. It’s no good going on a herbal tea and brown rice diet if you can only do it for two days!

    So, to give you some ideas, substitute fish for meat, cut out alcohol, substitute herbal tea for coffee and tea, Cut out rich sauces and all fatty foods, eliminate salt and cut out all foods made with white flour. Yes it sounds painful but put your imagination to work, there are a lot of healthy foods you can substitute with.

    Keep up the vegies, try serving them sprinkled with herbs or baking them in a quiche without pastry. Try pumpkin seeds as a snack, they’re lovely sprinkled over cereal. Go to a health food shop or even the health section of your supermarket and do some research.

    If you have digestive problems, a good detox for you may be cutting out all dairy and wheat products. Try soy milk or rice milk and breads made out of other flours such as rye, rice and soy flours.

    Always take in some form of fiber to help elimination. Psyllium is great as it does not cause any food allergies. Start with just one teaspoon and if that causes no bloating or discomfort, increase it gradually.

    Think water. It can be spring water, bottled water, filtered or rain water. If your domestic supply is ok, tap water is fine too. Herbal teas are great but read the label, some of them can be quite potent! Fruit and vegetable juices are fantastic but have them instead of a meal, not as an extra. Some of them are quite high in kilojoules.

    Some people take supplements when they are detoxing, others don’t. I like to take a herb called “milk thistle”. It helps the liver to cleanse and heal.

    Rapid detoxification can make you feel quite sick and can happen if you jump too quickly into detox from a bad diet loaded with fat sugar and chemical colors and flavors. Try to eliminate the bad foods first and go onto a healthier diet before attempting detox. However if you get mild headaches or experience drowsiness, try to stick with it. It’s a sign that you body is eliminating those toxins.

    Skin brushing (or dry brushing) can aid the detox process, use a loofah or natural bristle brush and starting from the hands brush the skin gently. Always start from the extremities and work towards the heart or centre of your body. Skin brushing will aid your circulation, remove dead skin cells and make you feel rejuvenated.

    Exercise will also help. Exercising will make the body sweat, speeding up the elimination of toxic wastes. No need to run a marathon, do what you enjoy but do it regularly.

    You may find your skin will get worse before it gets better, but soon you’ll see a clearer more radiant complexion. Acne will improve, your eyes will look clearer and, as a bonus, you may find your appetite decreases and sugar cravings diminish.
    Pregnant women should consult their doctor before attempting detox. Young children or sick people should not radically alter their diet in any way. Seek medical advice first.

    Just as a thought. It’s better to be on a healthy diet most of the time than be on a bad diet and detoxing regularly. It’s what we do every day that counts the most. Try to use this detox time to re think your eating habits and lifestyle choices.

    Dry Skin Care

    Is your dry skin itchy and flaky or cracking and peeling?
    While dry skin may indicate any of several skin disorders such as psoriasis or eczema, you may simply have skin that is badly in need of hydration. The epidermis, or outer layer of skin, is easily dehydrated, particularly in cold, windy weather or after extensive unprotected sun exposure. Flaky, itchy skin, itchy scalp, or scaling can result. Painful chaffing can appear on the skin.

    These problems can be very annoying and uncomfortable, not to mention
    unattractive. Severely dehydrated skin can result in dermatitis, a common skin
    irritation. Dermatitis can be easily treated by your physician, but it is
    certainly unattractive and uncomfortable during an attack of dermatitis.

    To cure your serious itchy, scaly skin problems, you must
    avoid cleaning the skin with hot water. Always cleanse itchy, flaky or cracked
    skin with lukewarm water. Using water that is too hot simply removes more of
    the important natural protective oils produced by the skin, resulting in more
    itching, cracking and flaking. While skin is still damp from cleansing,
    liberally apply a good quality moisturizing
    lotion or oil to the affected areas. There are lotions specifically
    formulated for itchy, cracking skin problems and are available at very
    affordable prices. If you believe your skin problem may be psoriasis, eczema,
    dermatitis or another of the many skin problems, you should consult with your
    doctor. But for every day, common dehydrated skin, regular use of moisturizing
    products applied twice per day should remedy the problems quickly.

    If scaly, itchy scalp is your problem, cleanse hair
    thoroughly with moisturizing shampoo,
    rinsed well with tepid water. Follow this with a good quality moisturizing
    conditioner. If itchy, flaky scalp problems continue, you may need to seek the
    advice of your doctor to obtain a prescription formula shampoo to control the
    flaking.

    Despite what you hear that there are three skin types: dry skin, oily skin and combination skin, those that suffer with acne blemishes will tell you that they fall into one category, problematic skin.

    People that are prone to acne should choose beauty products specially made for acne. Do not use any beauty products that have added dyes and perfumes, as these ingredients can seriously aggravate your blemishes.

    Vitamins like A, C, E and B-complex, and minerals like zinc can improve the condition and overall health of your skin. Therefore, plan you meals rich in these vitamins and minerals to help heal your skin and promote good health.

    Foods rich in sulfur such as garlic and onions has been know to help alleviate acne blemishes. Sugar, fried foods, or other foods high in fat content should be avoided. Reducing or better yet, eliminating your intake of carbonated beverages with sugar can help reduce acne blemishes.

    A. Contrary to the above, you should not over wash your skin, this mean excessive scrubbing. You cannot scrub the acne away. Extreme scrubbing will worsen acne and causes more blemishes to open up and spread.
    B. Although it seems natural to pick, squeeze or pop a pimple, doing so can cause scarring, spreading the blemish, and open the acne up to a bacterial infection. Therefore, keep your fingers away from you face.
    C. Smoking. There is nothing good to say about smoking, it is harmful to the body, both interior and exterior.
    D. Skin toners are recommended for additional cleaning, if not overused. Unfortunately, they contain alcohol and acetone that is drying and can be damaging to the skin.
    E. Despite the fact that some sun exposure may help dry up surface acne blemishes, extended sun exposure can damage the skin and worsen acne in the end.
