Under the gun is always a difficult place to play poker from. In a .25/.50 cash game I was UTG with AK off-suit. I had $63. I decided to try and instigate some action by min-raising to $1 This raise made nearly everyone fold, until we got to the poker player on the button. He had a stack a little larger than $100. With AK out of position, my best option is to play this hand preflop. If he has AA or KK and I flat call and hit top pair, I could likely be losing my whole stack here. If he has something like QQ he’s probably not going to give me much action if the Ace or king flops. Unfortunately, he then 5-bet to $22. This was $1 larger than a min-raise. If the bet was maybe $30 I would think about shoving and hoping to be in a coinflip, but his cajoling bet really discouraged me from doing this. I didn’t think he’d 5-bet min raise me with anything less than AA or KK and he might not even do this with KK. Queens would probably shove on me in hopes of putting me in a tough spot. Later in the session, I got no action with KK in cutoff after making a 3x opening bet. I also got no action blind vs. blind with JJ against a short stack.

He’s too scared not to bet, and lose out on making any more money, so he breaks down and bets. If I fold, he probably wins the same amount than if he checked, unless I decide to try and bluff the river after giving up on the turn (unlikely). So, the problem I see is not something I would expect to see above the microstakes. He protected his BB with K, 2 off suit. I only made a 2.5x raise, but here he’s looking to connect with a flop. He is out of position, and most likely he’s just throwing that money away. If he hits a 2, do you really think he’s feeling confident enough to stick in the hand? He’s only staying if he hits top pair or better, and that’s a long shot. Now the flop comes out and he has the idiot straight draw. He doesn’t have the 6, drawing open ended to the high end of the straight, he has the 2. He calls .85 in a not too terrible. .85 to win 1.95 is 2.2-1. He is about a 70/30 dog (assuming he doesn’t know his king high is good and he is only looking for is open-ended straight outs to win; if you throw in the king outs, he has 11 outs). But the value is absurd. At these tiny levels, you can make bad calls for small entries into pots, or draws, and expect to win much, much more. The tangibility of 7 Euros does not feel like 35 BBs. Once the pot gets to be over 2 Euros, stacks fly. So, in microstakes games, if you can’t apply the same self restraint as higher stakes games because the money is so incalculable, I’d advise small stakes sit and go’s because poker online tournament chips feel much more unbiased in terms of their value.
